Healing Botanicals: Licorice Root
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
In Ayurveda, licorice (yashtimadhu in Sanskrit) is considered a rasayana (rejuvenative) herb, widely valued for increasing longevity, vitality, and overall wellness by nourishing tissues and supporting hormonal balance, especially during Vata seasons and times of life.
Ayurvedic Profile
Rasa (taste) - sweet
Virya (energy) - cooling
Vipaka (post-digestive effect) - sweet
Doshic Impact - balances Vata and Pitta, may increase Kapha if overused
Key Benefits and Uses:
Respiratory Support: Licorice is renowned for its ability to relieve coughs, sore throats, and respiratory discomfort. Its demulcent (soothing) and anti-inflammatory properties make it effective in reducing irritation in the respiratory tract.
Digestive Health: It soothes the stomach lining, helping with acid reflux, ulcers, and gastritis, making it a powerful digestive tonic for Pitta-related issues.
Promotes Skin Healing: Licorice is used for its anti-inflammatory and rejuvenative properties to treat skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rashes.
Calms the Nervous System: Licorice's sweet and cooling properties help stabilize Vata, making it beneficial for stress, anxiety, and mental exhaustion.
Enhances Immunity: Licorice strengthens Ojas (vital energy) and supports the immune system, providing protection against seasonal illnesses.
Renee's Favorite Uses:
Rasa Tea - This is a classic Ayurvedic remedy to keep the lymphatic and respiratory systems hydrated and our energy grounded. I make a large blend of this to keep on hand and drink several times a week or daily, especially in late fall and winter. Its flavor is quite sweet, greatly due to the addition of licorice root. This was inspired by my teacher Mary Thompson.
Combined equal parts of each ingredient and store in an airtight glass jar.
1 part licorice root
1 part fennel seeds
1 part fenugreek seeds
1 part shatavari root
1 part tulsi (holy basil) leaves
1 part dried ginger root
Mix 1/4 cup tea with 1 cup boiling water. Steep for up to 30 minutes, then enjoy!
Contraindications: Prolonged use or high doses may increase Kapha and cause water retention or elevated blood pressure in sensitive individuals. People with hypertension, kidney issues, or hormonal conditions should use it cautiously. If pregnant, may affect hormonal levels.
