Why Dry Brushing is a Game-Changer

I don’t know about you, but this body system wasn’t discussed in my classes growing up: the lymphatic system. And it’s a vital one! In Ayurveda, it’s linked to rasa dhatu, the first organ system and layer of nourishment in the body, responsible for hydration, carrying nutrients, supporting immunity, and overall vitality.

This time of year, Spring or Kapha season, is when our lymphatic system needs extra care as Kapha dosha has a tendency to bring us out of balance showing up as excess mucous, allergies, colds, water retention, and lethargic energy. Thankfully, Ayurveda gave me my favorite feel good, go to practice for promoting balance at this time - dry brushing.

Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no pump of its own, so movement, breath, and Ayurvedic practices like dry brushing, and self-massage (abhyanga) help keep it flowing, clearing out waste and leaving us feeling lighter, clearer, and more radiant from the inside, out. Give this one a try and experience these enlivening effects!

Benefits of Dry Brushing

  • Immunity support: natural detoxification and reduction of undesirable waste, such as viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells occurs

  • Exfoliation of the skin: dead cells are sloughed off for a smoother, more radiant glow (and it feels so good!)

  • Circulation boost: blood flow is stimulated leading to more nourished and vibrant skin

  • Energizing the body: the nervous system is invigorated and enlivens the Spirit

  • Digestion support: those gentle strokes over the abdomen can stimulate GI function keeping things moving as intended

  • Reduction of puffiness: excess or stagnant fluids are encouraged to move and reduces bloating and swelling

I find it’s best done just before taking a shower, so the dead skin cells can wash away revealing luxuriously smooth skin.
